Life and Art

"As I see it today, the meaning of a musical career is found in the synthesis of two elements: a high level of training and professionalism allied with a strong desire for enduring achievements." This statement by Evgueni Ratchev, concertmaster and artistic director of the "Soloists of Londrina" Chamber Orchestra, reflects a tireless dedication to music. The art of overcoming obstacles and realizing achievements is a constant in the life of this violinist.

R
atchev began his studies at the age of seven in his homeland, Bulgaria. At that age he would never have imagined that he would someday cross the globe, trading Bulgaria’s frozen scenery for a tropical country where he would start orchestras. First completing undergraduate studies and a master’s degree at the Music Academy in Sofia, he then specialized under the German masters Fritz Elers and Ziegfried Palm, and conducted with the Italian Franco Ferrara. He has since performed concerts in Europe, Japan, and Africa.

The year 1987 would bring a new direction to his artistic career when he was invited by the government of Pará to take residence in Brazil. Here he founded the Pará String Quartet and The Pará Chamber Orchestra, performing as concertmaster and conductor, around the country as well as internationally.

In 1996, Ratchev changed sceneries again, moving from Pará to Paraná, where he became the concertmaster for the Londrina State University Orchestra. He simultaneously served as the adjunct conductor until 2003.

He has performed concerts as a soloist on Brazilian soil as well as abroad, and as a guest conductor for the Garland Symphony Orchestra, New Symphony Orchestra of Arlington, and Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra in Texas (USA). Ratchev is annually invited to perform concerts as a conductor and as a soloist for the Missouri Chamber Orchestra and the University Philharmonic Orchestra in Columbia, Missouri. He also teaches master classes for violin at the same university.

In 1998, Ratchev gathered a group of musicians recognized for their mastery, thus founding the "Soloists of Londrina" Chamber Orchestra. As artistic director and concertmaster he compiled a refined repertoire that resulted in the award winning CD "Imagens Brasileiras" (2002), "Brazilianas" (2004) released in Austria, Germany and France on the Zappel-Music Label, "Marsupilami" (soundtrack 2003), "Imperial Family – Portrait Album" (CD – ROM), "Música dos Séculos" (2007) and, now, "Retratos" in celebration of a great Brazilian composer and the ten year anniversary of the orchestra.
